Solder Joint Bronze Fittings

Cup-type bronze fittings for soldered connections to copper tube.

Overview

Solder-joint (sweat) fittings join copper or compatible tube using a low-melting solder that flows into the clearance between tube and fitting socket by capillary action. Solder fillers melt below roughly 450 °C (840 °F), which distinguishes soldering from brazing.

Solder joints are widely used in plumbing, heating and low-temperature fluid systems. Joint strength and service temperature are lower than for brazed joints.

Connection geometry

Solder-joint fittings have a cup sized to the tube outside diameter. Cup depth and clearance control the strength of the soldered joint.

Soldering versus brazing

Soldering and brazing both use capillary flow, but brazing uses higher-melting filler metals and produces stronger joints with higher service temperature. Do not substitute one for the other without checking the design and applicable codes.

Suitable applications

Common settings include potable and non-potable water (where permitted by regulation), heating and general low-temperature fluid lines. Lead-restricted systems require lead-free fittings and fillers.

Material and solder compatibility

Cast bronze fittings such as C83600 are routinely soldered. Lead-free systems must match both the fitting alloy and the solder composition to the applicable regulation.

  • C83600 / C84400 – general fittings
  • C89833 – lead-free option (verify compliance)

Installation considerations

Clean tube ends and sockets, apply flux, heat evenly and let joints cool undisturbed. Follow the installer’s procedure and applicable codes.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use lead-containing fittings for drinking water?

Regulations vary; many regions restrict lead in potable-water wetted parts. Verify against your local requirement.

Is a soldered joint as strong as a brazed joint?

Generally not. Brazed joints tolerate higher temperature and load; the choice depends on the system design.
